A magical effort from Petrus, the 2000 has continued to gain weight and stature. From the bottle, it is a perfect wine, much like the 1998. The color is inky plum/purple to the rim and the nose, which starts slowly, begins to roar after several minutes, offering up scents of smoke, blackberries, cherries, licorice, and an unmistakable truffle/underbrush element. On the palate, this enormous effort is reminiscent of dry vintage port, with fabulous ripeness, a huge, unctuous texture, enormous body, and a colossal 65-second finish. I did not have the benefit of tasting it side by side with the equally perfect 1998, but it appears the 2000 is a more massive, macho/masculine wine, with more obvious tannin and structure than the seamless 1998. It is another wine to add to the legacy of the great vintages of Petrus. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2050.<br/><br/>NOTE: The passing of a legend. Jean-Pierre Moueix, 1913-2003, passed away the weekend of March 29-30. A noble and erudite man, he single-handedly established the reputation for Pomerol. Founding his negociant firm in Libourne in 1937, he developed a marketplace in Belgium and northern Europe for many of the area's greatest wines. His success led to the purchase of many of the better vineyards, most renowned of which were Trotanoy (1953), La Fleur-Petrus (1953), Magdelaine (1954), and Petrus, partially owned until its outright acquisition in 2002.<br/><br/>Jean-Pierre Moueix and his two sons, Christian and Jean-Francois, were the cornerstones of my early education of the wines of Pomerol. As a beneficiary of his wisdom and generosity, I shall always remember him as a visionary as well as a great man. His death symbolizes the end of an extraordinary life and era.

Dunkles, sattes Granat, feiner Rand aussen. Reifes Bouquet, kandierte Cakesfrüchte, Engelwurz, gehacktes Zitronat, Minze, Kokos, darunter Tiefe anzeigende Trüffelnoten. Fetter, runder Gaumen, aussen schmeichelnd, innen noch viel Tannine zeigend, rotbeerig, aber auch ein Hauch Cassis, im Finale druckvoll mit einen schokoladigen Kokos-Bountyton den man früher beim 1970er in der Jugendphase erleben konnte. Merlot-Power mit Sex-Appeal und grossem Potential. Kann in seiner vollen Genussphase die Maximalnote erreichen. (19/20). 11: Extrem dunkle Farbe, keine Reifetöne, Violett und schwarz in der Mitte. Unwerfendes Bouquet, rotes Cassis, kandierte Cakesfrüchte, Ingwer, Zitronenthymian, flüssige Schokolade gibt eine ernorme Fülle in der Nase. Im Gaumen eine noble Weincreme pur, sublim mit opulentem Fluss, alles ist perfekt eingebunden. Er nach einer einfach nachvollziehbaren Merlot-Perfektion sucht, der suche nach einem solchen Schluck, viel Bountynoten mit Kokos und Pralinen im langen Finale. Ist eigentlich (zumindest momentan!) mehr ein Weltklasse-Merlot wie ein Pétrus. Masetto lässt grüssen! (20/20). 15: Die dunkelste Farbe aller drei Pomerols, aber auch eher im rubinem Bereich. Eine volle, feinwuchtige Fruchtnote zeigend, nicht nur herrliches Cassis, sondern auch reife Maulbeeren und Kokosnuancen, sowie ein Touch von verführerischem Vanille, erotisch und bewegend vom ersten Moment an. Im Gaumen fast dropsig, eine unbändige, erotische Süsse in sich tragend. Der Merlot wirkt seidig, zart-cremig und zeigt dabei eine unvergleichliche Balance. Im Gegensatz zum den schier übergrossen Jahrgängen 1998 und 1989 ist dies ein Pétrus, welcher den Charme und den Saft vom 1990er geerbt hat. Hier sollte man auf Nichts mehr warten. Ausser auf die nächste Gelegenheit. Das war eine Super-Superdelikatesse!!! 15: Unglaublich dichte Farbe, sattes Purpur mit schier schwarzen Reflexen. Die Nase ist extrem konzentriert und lässt zu Beginn nur wenig Aromen durch. Nach etwa 10 Minuten explodiert das Bouquet richtig gehend und vermittelt einen ausufernden Beerencocktail, Ingwer, kandierte Cakesfrüchte, Kokos. Caramel, Pralinen. Im Gaumen eine Esssenz von dicht beschichteten Stoffen, also enggliedrig und mit einer umfassenden Adstringenz ausgestattet. Eigentlich war er noch viel zu jung, aber mit dieser Merlotsüsse ausgestattet, hatte man keinen Schluck lang ein schlechtes Gewissen. Diese Erlebnis war mir wesentlich mehr wert, als auf einer Auktion für diese Magnum das Geld zu bekommen. 20/20

Dark color, with loads of smoky grilled meat and ripe fruit aromas. Lots of violets. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a superlong finish. Solid and tight. Like a tightly wound piece of silk string. Just as I remember it.--Ptrus non-blind vertical. Best after 2012. JS
