For many years, Spain has been the country with the most vineyards planted worldwide. Its 60 different denominations (known as DO or DOCa), are divided amongst their 1.16 million hectares of vines. Despite having many wines of high quality, its most famous regions for complex, beguiling wines are Ribera del Duero, Rioja and Priorat. Ribera del Duero, one of our favourites, is a modern classic. Though its greatest estate, Bodegas Vega Sicilia, has existed for over 150 years, its true potential was not realized until the 1980s when Alejandro Fernández created Pesquera. Many other exciting and dynamic estates followed, including the exceptional Pingus, which has become legendary in its own time.
