19 Rene Gabriel
Cabernet Sauvignon, 47 % Merlot, 8 % Syrah).

The 2008 Saffredi, on the other hand, is a bit mystifying. It comes across as quite understated and lacking the necessary mid-palate juiciness to balance the 75% new oak barrels. Dark red fruit, spices and flowers emerge over time, but the wine’s customary explosive, exuberant personality are nowhere to be found. Ultimately, the 2008 is well-made but lacks excitement. The 2008 Saffredi is 49% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Syrah. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2023. Elisabetta Geppetti makes some of the most delicious wines in the Tuscan Maremma. Readers who want to learn more about the estate should check out my recently published article on www.erobertparker.com covering verticals of the estate’s twin flagships Poggio Valente and Saffredi.

Fresh and lively, if on the grapey, jammy side. Blackberry, black currant and tea flavors are focused by the structure, but not dominated. Vanilla lingers on the finish. For fans of the modern style. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Alicante. Best from 2012 through 2020. 2,165 cases made. –BS
Producer
Fattoria le Pupille
Fattoria Le Pupille is one of the most fascinating wineries in Italy. This southern Maremma estate was well-established before the recent rush of new arrivals to the region. While quality continues to skyrocket with renascences every few years of so, the 65-hectare vineyard produces complex, weighted and structured wines that will be difficult for newer producers to emulate. Their top wine is a single-vineyard Super-Tuscan blend of the Bordelais varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. The woman behind Le Pupille’s success and even Morellino di Scansano’s impressive reputation, is owner Elisabetta Geppetti. Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate even goes as far to say, “There is always a single face that identifies a region: A sole producer with the charisma and communicative talents required to perform the ambassadorial duties that bring a relatively obscure wine area to the world stage. For the Maremma, that person is Elisabetta Geppetti.”
