94 Wine Spectator
This shows extremely fresh aromas of currants, berries and flowers. Medium-bodied, with dried strawberry and currant flavors. Shows wonderful hints of Indian spices. Most 1945s are more aggressively tannic, but this bottle is seductive and caressing.--Non-blind Château Montrose vertical. Drink now.

Tasted at the Montrose vertical in London, the 1945 Montrose may have been born in a victorious and lionized growing season, yet the estate had had no time to recover from the trauma of the war and being a prime target for Allied bombers. Compared to the 1947 Montrose, it appears even more youthful in color: clean with just a thin tawny rim giving away its age. The bouquet is well defined with scents of red berry fruit, black truffle, woodland leaves and a touch of brown spice. The delineation here is fine, if not otherworldly. The palate is balanced with impressive, clean and pure red fruit, yet somehow conservative and controlled, a little curtailed on the finish. I was actually more taken with this than Hervé Berland who liked succeeding vintages. It is not the best 1945 on the block, but it passes muster. Tasted June 2016.

Mittlere Schulter. Aufhellendes Orange-Braun.

Producing outstanding Bordeaux year after year, this 95-hectare property, Château Montrose is a classified Second Growth in the Saint-Estèphe hierarchy. Just north of Pauillac, Montrose is ideally-situated on a gravelly, well-drained plot that runs along the Gironde estuary for over a kilometer. The local microclimate, unique to Montrose works to mitigate temperatures, protecting the vines from devastating frosts as well as equally destructive heatwaves. The patchwork of a vineyard, planted on the world’s most privileged winegrowing terroirs, has been owned by Martin and Olivier Bouygues since 2006. In 2012 they brought in Hervé Berland, the former managing director of Mouton Rothschild to act as estate manager. This spectacular Saint-Estèphe château crafts three wines, they are immense, powerful, dense and long-lived. The leading wine, Montrose is a monumental fleshy, and persuasive red.
