The 1998 vintage is a personal favorite of mine for modern sleeper vintages in Bordeaux, which means that many wine lovers still overlook this year. I have always thought in my mind that it was something like the heralded but slightly forgotten 1950 vintage. However, I obviously did not taste the 1950s when they were young! I was lucky enough to taste 1998 Chateau Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion recently side-by-side and I was slightly surprised how they opened and ready to drink they were. They were so wonderful in the glass now... The Haut-Brion showed super decadent character with foie gras, plums and tobacco. It was full body, round and beautifully textured. It lasted for minutes after tasting. I scored it 96 points. Meanwhile, the La Mission Haut-Brion was even better. It showed so much iodine, chili, and currants with a distinct warm stone character in the nose. It was full body with ultra-velvety tannins and a fabulous finish. Plenty of licorice also came out of the glass. It's a fabulous wine now. 98 points.

99: Kompaktes, geballtes Bouquet, tiefgründig, Trüffeltöne, Havanna Tabak, leicht pflaumige Süssnoten, wirkt insgesamt durch seine Tiefe noch sehr verschlossen. Im Gaumen fest, starke Adstringenz, viel komprimierte Terroirwürze im Extrakt, Pflaumentöne, dunkles Cassis, Mahagoni, zarte Schwarzschokonote im Finale, kann vielleicht ebenfalls 19/20 Punkte in seiner vollen Genussphase erreichen und wäre dann mindestens ebenso gut oder noch besser als alle Premiers Crus classés im Médoc. (18/20). 05: Dunkles Granat-Rubin. Delikates, frisches Fruchtbouquet, herrliche Kirschentöne, florale Würze, Rosenduft, harmonisch und enggliedrig. Konzentrierter, hoch feiner Gaumen, reife Tannine, strahlt eine grossartige Harmonie aus, noch fein sandig, noch weit von seiner ersten Reife dabei. Als mitteldichter Wein viel Charakter zeigend, was typisch zu einem grossen Mission passt. (18/20). 11: Sattes Purpur-Granat, dicht in der Mitte, lila Schimmer aussen. Sehr aromatisch in der Nase, tabakiger Cabernet, getrocknete Nussschalen, Sommertrüffel und schwarze, getrocknete Pilze, ein Hauch Eucalyptus, was ihm eine Kalifornische Affinität gibt. Fleischiger Gaumen mit recht fetten Tanninen, wirkt fülliger als der Haut-Brion, charaktervoll mit viel Kraft. Er entwickelt sich zum grossen Mission und ist somit ein unbedingtes Kauf-Muss wer diesen Wein liebt. Noch kostet er weniger als die Hälfte der neuen Editionen. Drei Stunden Dekantieren. Extrem langlebig. (19/20). 12: Recht dunkles Granat, sehr satt in der Mitte. Wildes Cabernetbouquet, noch etwas verhalten, zeigt trotzdem eine schöne, trüffelige Tiefe im schwarzpflaumigen Nasenbild an. Im jungen Gaumen noch vordergründig, nicht wahnsinnig dicht, aber mit den Mission-Jahrgängen 1995 und 1996 locker mithaltend. Der Körper ist mittelgewichtig und so gelingt es den Tanninen sich noch ziemlich charaktervoll in der noch verlangenden Adstringenz zu zeigen. Noch viel zu jung. Wer ihn jetzt schon geniessen will, sollte in lang Dekantieren. Typischer Mission – eine Kaufempfehlung. trinken ( - 2045)
