The current vintage for the crianza is 2012. The 2012 Crianza, from a dry vintage, resulted much fresher than expected, fresher than 2009 and 2011 in fact. The vines are dry-farmed and were planted some 22 years ago, and you might say they have matured by now. The approximate mixture of grapes in their vineyards is mostly Tempranillo with some 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and 2% Malbec, and it's more or less the blend in this wine. The Cabernet works well, providing finesse and some acidity to the Tempranillo. Merlot does not work that well, and they are regrafting it to Cabernet and Malbec, so in future vintages there will be less of it. The wine matured in 20% new French oak barrels for some 20 months. There are no traces of the barriques and the nose took me to the Riberas of yesteryear, with some subtle rusticity; it's ripe without excess and there's good balance between fruit, spices and perhaps something earthy. The palate is extremely balanced, medium-bodied with very fine tannins, tasty, approachable and long. This could very well be the best crianza ever produced at Monasterio. This has to be one of the bargains of the vintage in Ribera, given the quality it delivers. 175,000 bottles produced. I tasted the latest releases from Hacienda Monasterio with winemaker Peter Sisseck. They are, year in and year out, among the best and most reliable wines from Ribera del Duero, with a superb Crianza in 2012, possibly their best ever. Even if the wines are not cheap, they are very good value for the quality they deliver. I also had the chance to catch up and drink a bottle of their 1996 Crianza, a particular favorite of mine, with proprietor Carlos del Río and his son, a few weeks later; it remains a superb wine, still young and lively. They have recently bought a majority share of the Montecastro winery also in Ribera del Duero to produce a complementary range of wines (read cheaper) to those from Monasterio.

Einer der bekanntesten Namen in Ribera del Duero ist Hacienda Monasterio, einen Steinwurf von Vega Sicilia in Valbuena de Duero gelegen. Es erübrigt sich, zu betonen, dass die Weinberge dieses Weinguts über eine ausgezeichnete Lage verfügen. Im Gegensatz zu vielen Weingütern der Region ist es schon lange hier ansässig und wurde im 19. Jahrhundert von der Familie Lecanda aufgebaut, die als Pionier in der Region eine neue Form der Weinproduktion gegründet hat. Was dieses Haus so einzigartig macht, ist die Tatsache, dass kein anderer als Peter Sisseck sein Winzer ist, Inhaber und Erzeuger des nahe gelegenen Pingus. Als sein Name Mitte der 1990er Jahre zum ersten Mal auf der internationalen Weinszene auftauchte, bezeichnete Robert Parker die Reservas des Hauses als „Spanischen Pomerol“. Hergestellt aus extrem niedrigen Erträge (15-20hl/ha) und einer Mischung aus biologisch angebautem Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon und oder Merlot, sind ihre Weine für dichte, reiche Aromen mit Frucht- und Gewürznoten bekannt.
