The 1989 Masseto is pure silk. It shows striking inner perfume and sweetness as it blossoms on the palate with layers of expressive fruit. This is a fabulous showing for the 1989. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014.

Pleasant and fresh, with black olive and berry aromas and flavors, almost tobaccolike. It's medium-bodied, with soft tannins and a light finish. This was a difficult vintage with lots of rain, but the wine is better than I remember.--Masseto non-blind vertical. Drink now. ?JS

Masseto
Masseto is without a question, recognized as one of Italy's most iconic wines. A unique vineyard of just 7-hectares, planted upon soil rich in Pliocene clays, blessed with a mild Mediterranean climate and gentle sea breezes: this is the birthplace of Masseto. Set on a gently sloping hill, the vineyard is divided into three sections, which contain different clay-based soil types. The distinct variances between soil, climate, terrain, and tradition make up Masseto’s magnificent terroir. This is nurtured by a passionate and dedicated team which approaches each step of the harvesting and vinification meticulously. In the search of excellence, all of these components come together producing a unique wine, with impressive complexity and sublime elegance.
