Plenty of subtle flavor at the end. Racy tannins. 80% cabernet sauvignon, 15% cabernet franc and 5% merlot. Already very integrated and attractive but will be even better in three or four years.96 Robert ParkerOne of the wines of the vintage, the 2021 Léoville Las Cases is reminiscent of a hypothetical blend of the 1999 and 1996—only better. Offering up incipiently complex aromas of cassis, plums and dark berries mingled with loamy soil, cigar wrapper and exotic spices, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with superb amplitude and concentration, velvety tannins, lively acids and a long, penetrating finish. Uniting classicism and charm, it exemplifies how a great terroir, exigent agronomy and meticulous winemaking can deliver greatness even in a less propitious vintage. It's a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc and a mere 5% Merlot this year, checking in at 13.2% alcohol. Producer Château Léoville Las CasesGlobally recognized as the finest of the Médoc Super Seconds, Château Léoville Las Cases oftentimes outperforms the First Growths. This substantial estate spreads across the gravelly-clay soils with 98-hectares of vines unfolding beside the Saint-Julien village. The château has remained under the Delon family’s reign since the late 19th century. Léoville Las Cases is the largest but not the sole property of Jean-Hubert Delon, the family also owns two other châteaux, Potensac in Médoc and Nénin in Pomerol. These powerful Saint-Julien wines are Cabernet Sauvignon dominated blends with 18 months of new-oak barrel aging. The innovative vinification methods, specifically the use of lower-temperature fermentation gives the wines a Léoville Las Cases flair – adding rich and exotic aromas. This quality-attentive winery produces the Grand Vin from only the greatest terroirs, making the wine an imitable Bordeaux.
