19 Rene Gabriel

A remarkable vintage for Pichon Longueville Baron, 1990 is one of this estate’s two or three finest wines made in the last 40 years. Still inky/blue/purple-tinged to the rim, it reveals an extraordinary bouquet of charcoal, incense, creme de cassis, blue and black fruits, and a hint of licorice as well as an impressively long finish. While drinkable, its evolution is extremely slow, and I would not be surprised to see it last another two decades or more

More tobacco and cedar character on the nose, with hints of ripe fruit. Full-bodied, yet fine and sophisticated, with elegant tannins and a long finish. This is always a top-quality red. '89/'90 Bordeaux non-blind horizontal. Drink now. ?JS

Château Pichon-Longueville Baron
A Second Growth marked by its Cabernet-dominated full-bodied reds, Château Pichon-Longueville Baron is one of Bordeaux’s most famed Super Seconds. Founded in the late 17th century, the château was built in 1851 and boasts a breathtaking view of the Gironde Estuary. The fine-wine branch of the AXA insurance company, AXA Millésimes acquired the property in 1987 bringing in owner of Château Lynch-Bages, Jean-Michel Cazes shortly after to run the estate. Together with major renovations of the estate and the Cazes’ management, excellence was soon restored. Retiring in 2000, Christian Seely assumed Cazes’ important role as managing director. Today, their signature muscular wines are a culmination of years of precision and craftsmanship, from vineyard to cellar. Pichon-Longueville Baron is the rich and layered Grand Vin, this five-star wine gains in depth with at least 10 years of cellaring. The second wine, Les Tourelles de Longueville was introduced in 1986 and similarly conveys the château’s classic powerful, but elegant style.
