Mittleres Granat, feiner rubiner Rand aussen, also keine jener Farben die wie die andern mit tief violetten Schimmer bestückt ist. Elegantes, nobles Bouquet, feine Zederntöne, Backpflaumen, Lakritze und eine wohlige Süsse darüber zeigend. Im Gaumen delikat, tänzerisch, sehr fein und elegant, tolles Lakritzearoma im feinherben Finale. Ein eleganter Klassiker, der vielleicht zu Beginn unterschätzt wird. 10: Oft an Bordeauxproben als grosser Grand-Cru-Wert präsentiert. Rauchige Cabernetwürze, etwas Moschus und Hirschleder, nobel und elegant. Kostet etwa die Hälfte von dem, was er wert ist. (18/20). 12: In München an der Weinkeller-Erföffnung bei Mövenpick. Plummy aromas, with leaf and tobacco undertones. Medium-bodied, with soft, silky tannins and a medium finish. Balanced and delightful already, yet needs a little more concentration to be outstanding. Best after 2010. 22,220 cases made. –JS

This estate continues to under perform, particularly in view of what the previous owners accomplished. Nothing made today resembles the great vintages of the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, or even the top-flight 2000. Nearly every St.-Julien chateau is making better wine, and Gruaud Larose needs a wake-up call. A stricter selection might be a place to start. The dark ruby/garnet-colored 2004 reveals an herbal nose displaying hints of dirty saddle leather intermixed with roasted herbs, spice, black cherries, currants, and a green pepper-like character. It is a lightweight effort with medium body, superficial depth, crisp acidity, and sharp tannins in the finish. While it will keep for 10-15 years, and may become slightly more complex, it remains a major disappointment.

Château Gruaud Larose
This large 2ème Grand Cru Classé estate, Château Gruaud Larose is responsible for producing some of the most powerful and massively structured wines in Saint-Julien. The property has belonged to the Merlaut family since 1997, however this historic Médoc château stems back to the 18th century. The property has remained under vines since its beginnings, planted just west of Beychevelle on the gravel-rich plateau, the vineyard consists of the noble Bordeaux varieties. With more than half of the vineyards dedicated to Cabernet Sauvignon, there are smaller amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot varieties. The family has introduced organic farming techniques to use throughout the 84-hectare vineyard, working to make the wine as natural as possible. These are persuasive dense and tannic reds that crave at least eight to ten years’ patience, the second wine Sarget de Gruaud Larose is made in a similar spirit of purity like the impressive Grand Vin, Gruaud Larose.
