19 Rene Gabriel
19/20 austrinken

Still remarkably youthful, my most recent bottle of the 1986 Gruaud Larose exhibited an impressively opaque hue, followed by aromas of blackcurrants, cigar ash, loamy soil, pencil shavings and subtle hints of smoked meats. Full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's a rich but tightly wound wine, with a deep core of fruit, lively acids and an abundance of powdery structuring tannin. Incredible as it may seem, it's comparatively advanced bottles of this 1986 that are drinking best today, as pristinely stored examples with perfect corks are still almost painfully youthful.

Tight, flat, closed nose, with a cedary, tobacco nuance. Firm, dense structure, dusty with tannins. Fruit suppressed but roundness emerges, with a hint of cassis. Should be a big wine.--Gruaud-Larose vertical. ?
Producer
Château Gruaud Larose
This large 2ème Grand Cru Classé estate, Château Gruaud Larose is responsible for producing some of the most powerful and massively structured wines in Saint-Julien. The property has belonged to the Merlaut family since 1997, however this historic Médoc château stems back to the 18th century. The property has remained under vines since its beginnings, planted just west of Beychevelle on the gravel-rich plateau, the vineyard consists of the noble Bordeaux varieties. With more than half of the vineyards dedicated to Cabernet Sauvignon, there are smaller amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot varieties. The family has introduced organic farming techniques to use throughout the 84-hectare vineyard, working to make the wine as natural as possible. These are persuasive dense and tannic reds that crave at least eight to ten years’ patience, the second wine Sarget de Gruaud Larose is made in a similar spirit of purity like the impressive Grand Vin, Gruaud Larose.
