18 Rene Gabriel

The 2014 Gazin was stubborn and broody when tasted in bottle, but give it a few swirls and there comes forth gravel and black truffle scents alongside sultry black fruit. These aromatics are so engaging and involving, drawing you in towards it charms. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp and taut with great precision and sappiness towards the focused, almost symmetrical, black truffle-laced finish. This continues Gazin's fine run of form, a great Pomerol from an estate predisposed these days to create sophisticated, classic wines.

A fresh and juicy style, with lots of blueberry, raspberry and plum coulis flavors that race through the anise-accented finish. Features ample, well-integrated toast.—J.M.

Château Gazin
Among the appellation’s larger properties, Château Gazin owns a 26-hectare single-plot of vines planted on the famous upper part of the Pomerol Plateau. Bordering those of Pétrus and L’Evangile, the gravelly clay soil vineyard is planted to a majority of Merlot, with the remaining 10% of land split among Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc plantings. Originally established in the late 1700s, the estate has gone through several owners before the Bailliencourt family bought the château in 1917. Generations of successful Bailliencourts have managed the estate, and since 1990 Nicolas de Bailliencourt has been in charge. Château Gazin traditionally vinifies their fruit then the wine is aged in 50% new oak barriques for 15-18 months. Producing rich styled wines, that are forward and opulent, the Grand Vin, Gazin shows the signature house style perfectly. The winery also produces a second wine, L’Hospitalet de Gazin, which is made in the same spirit of heritage.
