The 2016 Clos Fourtet is a blend of 90% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc aged in 60% new oak. It has a generous, well defined licorice-tinged fruit that is very focused. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, blackberry and boysenberry fruit with that salted licorice theme continuing. This Clos Fourtet has impressive concentration, yet there is real elegance and persistence, fanning out wonderfully towards the finish. Mathieu Cuvelier has overseen another outstanding Clos Fourtet. Tasted twice, with a second bottle demonstrating a tad more backbone but equally admirable.
Producer
Château Clos Fourtet
Ideally situated just outside of the Saint-Émilion town walls, Château Clos Fourtet is a perennial Bordeaux superstar. High on the clay soils of the limestone plateau, the 20-hectares of vineyards are planted to an amalgamate of predominately Merlot, with smaller plots of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The estate owes its name and lofty positioning to its long history. The property was once used as a fort in the Middle Ages to protect the city, called Clos Fourtet otherwise “Camp Fourtet”. At the turn of the century, Philippe Cuvelier acquired Clos Fourtet promising to follow in the path of those quality-conscious owners before him. Beside the expert oenologist, Stéphane Derenoncourt, the wines have especially been powerful and lavish during this past decade, raising standards year after year. Clos Fourtet, the Grand Vin is a densely extracted new-oaked red, a true refined and top-of-the-line Saint-Émilion wine. As one of the most beautifully placed estates, it is also ranked amongst the greatest Right Bank producers as a Premier Grand Cru Classé property.
