The 2001 Clos Fourtet has aged very gracefully, offering up aromas of dark berry fruit mingled with cigar wrapper, rich soil tones and smoke. Medium to full-bodied, layered and supple, it's a seamless, lively wine; and given the refinements that have taken place since, it bodes very well for the evolution of the Derenoncourt-era wines produced at this property.

Quite open, with a long, pure beam of gently mulled raspberry and boysenberry fruit, gilded with violet notes and chalky minerality that blossom through a long, refined finish. Cool rather than warm in profile. A wine of seduction. Drink now through 2030. 3,750 cases made.—J.M.

17/20 2006 – 2018

Château Clos Fourtet
Ideally situated just outside of the Saint-Émilion town walls, Château Clos Fourtet is a perennial Bordeaux superstar. High on the clay soils of the limestone plateau, the 20-hectares of vineyards are planted to an amalgamate of predominately Merlot, with smaller plots of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The estate owes its name and lofty positioning to its long history. The property was once used as a fort in the Middle Ages to protect the city, called Clos Fourtet otherwise “Camp Fourtet”. At the turn of the century, Philippe Cuvelier acquired Clos Fourtet promising to follow in the path of those quality-conscious owners before him. Beside the expert oenologist, Stéphane Derenoncourt, the wines have especially been powerful and lavish during this past decade, raising standards year after year. Clos Fourtet, the Grand Vin is a densely extracted new-oaked red, a true refined and top-of-the-line Saint-Émilion wine. As one of the most beautifully placed estates, it is also ranked amongst the greatest Right Bank producers as a Premier Grand Cru Classé property.
