I had this wine several times from the barrel, and also twice in comparative tastings prior to bottling. I never gave it more than average marks. Tasted numerous times after bottling, it is a different wine, relatively rich, spicy, plummy, with soft, silky, layered flavors, good concentration, and moderate tannin. It continues to drink well, yet it has the potential to last for 5-7 more years. Not a blockbuster in the mold of the 1982 and 1983, it is delicious and fully mature. Anticipated maturity: Now-2000. Dem 81er Cheval Blanc habe ich in Blindproben immer wieder eine gewisse Affinität zu einem grossen Tessiner Merlot attestiert. Ich habe ihn oft getrunken, vor allem, weil er immer wieder zu recht günstigen Preisen auf Weinkarten auftauchte. Eine grosse Enttäuschung war eine Doppelmagnum 1997: Offenes, zwar süsses, aber doch schon etwas verrauchtes Bouquet; Eisennote, leicht faulig. Im Gaumen trocken, Schokolade, eher kurz und schlank. Trotz Grossflasche – wenig Freude. Normalflasche 98: Mittleres Granat, wenig Tiefe. Süsses Caramelbouquet, wirkt recht füllig. Im Gaumen rund, charmant, noch viel Fruchtpräsenz, gute Struktur mit eleganter Bitterkeit im Extrakt, zeigt Körper und Charakter, bleibt dabei aber doch recht schlank. (17/20). 11: Mittleres Weinrot, deutlich aufhellender Rand. Das Bouquet beginnt ziemlich laktisch, zeigt Resten von roten Pflaumen, Kräuternoten, mittlerer Druck und in voller Reife, im zweiten Ansatz zeigt er eine feine, kühle Note von nicht ganz ausgereiftem Traubengut. Erstaunlich buttriger, fülliger Gaumen, viel Pflaumentöne, sehr weiche, charmante Tannine, endet wie ein gereifter Tessiner Merlot. Gut, aber etwas zu simpel für einen Premier. austrinken
