18 Rene Gabriel
74 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 26 % Merlot.

Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Pichon-Longueville Baron has more cohesion and intensity than the Pichon Lalande, with fresh tobacco and graphite-infused black fruit that have some gusto. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, not a complex Pichon Baron, but there is no question that it is endowed with fine mineralité. And, who can resist that vibrant, graphite-infused finish that lingers long in the mouth. Drinking perfectly now, I can see this continuing to drink well for another 12-15 years. Tasted February 2017. .

Smoke, tobacco, berry and mineral aromas lead to a full body, with fine, silky tannins and a long finish. Polished and well-made. Slightly hollow, but attractive. Best after 2012. –JS

.

Château Pichon-Longueville Baron
A Second Growth marked by its Cabernet-dominated full-bodied reds, Château Pichon-Longueville Baron is one of Bordeaux’s most famed Super Seconds. Founded in the late 17th century, the château was built in 1851 and boasts a breathtaking view of the Gironde Estuary. The fine-wine branch of the AXA insurance company, AXA Millésimes acquired the property in 1987 bringing in owner of Château Lynch-Bages, Jean-Michel Cazes shortly after to run the estate. Together with major renovations of the estate and the Cazes’ management, excellence was soon restored. Retiring in 2000, Christian Seely assumed Cazes’ important role as managing director. Today, their signature muscular wines are a culmination of years of precision and craftsmanship, from vineyard to cellar. Pichon-Longueville Baron is the rich and layered Grand Vin, this five-star wine gains in depth with at least 10 years of cellaring. The second wine, Les Tourelles de Longueville was introduced in 1986 and similarly conveys the château’s classic powerful, but elegant style.
