2003 was one of the hottest, earliest Bordeaux vintages ever. Some vines suffered from lack of moisture, but old vines and clay subsoil at Enclos saw this vineyard through. The Merlot harvest occurred between September 8 and 13, and the Cabernet Sauvignon was picked between September 22 and 30. The 2003 Latour is a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. Six percent of the press wine was added to the final blend. It has a medium to deep garnet-purple color, then wow—it explodes from the glass with bombastic black and blue fruits, followed up by meat, wood smoke, sandalwood and Indian spice accents with underlying floral wafts. The palate is full, rich, velvety, seductive and very long on the finish. There were only 10,800 cases made (rather than the normal 15,000-20,000).

A very flamboyant and exciting Latour. Sliced black truffles, sweet leather, spices, and dark fruits on the nose. Full and powerful, with roasted fruit and leather undertones. Big and velvety, with polished, almost dusty tannins, and a super long finish. This leans more towards sexy than intellectual. Very concentrated.

13: Schwarz, dicht, satt. Die Nase zeigt viel frisch gemahlenen schwarzen Pfeffer, Mahagoni, Redwoodholz, griechische Oliven, frisch fermentierter Schwarztee. Im Gaumen ein extremes, heiss ausstrahlendes Cabernetkonzentrat, trotz der massiven Adstringenz, wirken die Gerbstoffe im ganzen Gebilde, wohl durch das Fett des Weines, nicht überdimensioniert. Vielleicht hat er letztlich nicht ganz die Tiefe wie der ebenso legendäre 2000er aber dafür wird er vielleicht einmal als Latour-Bulldozer in die Geschichte eingehen. (20/20). 15: Auf Latour während dem Primeur im Jahr 2015. Da ich wusste wie er ist, habe ganz einfach das Dezi, welches mir eingeschenkt wurde, hemungslos genossen. Sorry - aber auch ich habe Privilegien. (20/20). 18: Mit dem Pape 2003 die dunkelste Farbe aller degustierten Weine. Immer noch mit sattem Granat und gewissen Lilatönen in der Mitte. Er geht nasal von Beginn weg in eine dramatische Tiefe: Rauch, Trüffel, Tabak, Pfefferkörner, schwarze Oliven und Pumpernickelbrot. Im zweiten Ansatz zeigt er eine unglaubliche intensive Aromatik von reifem, ausdrucksvollem Cabernet Sauvignon. Im Gaumen satt, fleischig, konzentriert mit einer absolut royalen, noch verlangenden, umfassenden und doch recht feinen Adstringenz. Auch hier dokumentiert er seinen unglaublich anmutenden Tiefgang. Bis zum letzten Moment meint man, dass man es hier mit einem fast gereiften Latour zu tun hat. Doch im Nachklang zeigt sich sein ausuferndes Alterungspotential. Dies zu Lasten einer möglichen jetzigen Genussfähigkeit. Wer nicht warten kann, erlebt bei Weiten nicht alles, was dieser legendäre Latour dereinst zu bieten hat. Allenfalls könnte ein sehr langes Kalt-Dekantieren einen gewissen Sinn machen. Warten ist aber sicher besser! (20/20). 19: Leider eine korkige Flasche an der grossen Latour-Probe in Seefeld.

Intense aromas of blackberry, licorice, currant and mineral. Full-bodied, with very well-integrated tannins and a long, long finish. Very refined and beautiful. Goes on for minutes. This reminds me of the fabulous 1996. But even better. Best after 2012. 10,000 cases made. JS
