The 1961 Gazin was a fabulous surprise. The wine displayed a knock-out, caramel/chocolate/coffee-scented nose, medium to full body, sweet, expansive, exotic black cherry and fruitcake-like flavors, and a chewy, fleshy, velvety-textured finish. This wine has been fully mature for some time, but it reveals no signs of fruit loss or color degradation.
Producer
Château Gazin
Among the appellation’s larger properties, Château Gazin owns a 26-hectare single-plot of vines planted on the famous upper part of the Pomerol Plateau. Bordering those of Pétrus and L’Evangile, the gravelly clay soil vineyard is planted to a majority of Merlot, with the remaining 10% of land split among Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc plantings. Originally established in the late 1700s, the estate has gone through several owners before the Bailliencourt family bought the château in 1917. Generations of successful Bailliencourts have managed the estate, and since 1990 Nicolas de Bailliencourt has been in charge. Château Gazin traditionally vinifies their fruit then the wine is aged in 50% new oak barriques for 15-18 months. Producing rich styled wines, that are forward and opulent, the Grand Vin, Gazin shows the signature house style perfectly. The winery also produces a second wine, L’Hospitalet de Gazin, which is made in the same spirit of heritage.
