While billed as a second wine, there’s nothing inferior about the 2012 Hermitage la Petite Chapelle. A terrific wine in its own right, it offers classic currants, black raspberry, smoked earth, ground herbs and subtle meatiness to go with a ripe, full-bodied, textured and balanced style on the palate. Despite having a slightly upfront style, it has ample mid-palate concentration and building tannin. Drink it over the coming 10-15 years.

The revamped Jaboulet firm, under the leadership of Caroline Frey, seems to have settled in and are now producing one serious lineup of wines from throughout the Rhone Valley.

Rather direct, with a core of red and black currant fruit laced with singed cedar and tobacco notes. A twinge of iron shows on the finish, though this relies a bit more on toast in the end, taking on a rather polished feel. Drink now through 2020. 50 cases imported. –JM
