In this vintage marked by extreme drought, heat, and hope-crushing rains at harvest time, Cheval Blanc has produced an open-knit, super ripe, roasted style of wine that is now fully mature. It has put on weight, and while there is some browning at the edge, the 1976 Cheval Blanc has a full-blown bouquet of ripe fruit, minerals, nuts, and toasty oak. On the palate, the wine is opulent, even fat, with generous, savory, fleshy, plummy, fruity flavors. Low in acidity and very soft, the 1976 Cheval Blanc has been drinkable since its release, yet it continues to expand and develop. I initially underestimated this wine. Anticipated maturity: Now. Unvergesslich an diesem Wein sind die Jugenderlebnisse, als er mit Lafite der beste des Jahrganges war. Notizen von damals, aus dem Jahr 1987 (18/20): Ein grosser 76er! Kompaktes Farbbild; sehr dicht. Cheval-Aromen, Irish Moos und Lakritze. Perfekter, fülliger Wein. Und bereits 1990 schrieb ich in mein Degustationsbuch: Nur Magnum oder optimal gelagerte Flaschen machen noch Freude. Der Wein ist nach seinem Höhepunkt, so etwa 1989, buchstäblich auseinandergefallen. Spätere Notizen waren geprägt von einem unappetitlichen Nasenbild und spröden Gaumenstrukturen, die maximal 14/20 Punkte hergaben. Die nachfolgende Doppelmagnum zeigte nochmals eine Renaissance von früherem Schwärmen, während Normalflaschen wohl alle so tot sind wie eine Kirchenmaus. 98: Doppelmagnum (17/20): Dunkles, reifes Weinrot. Pilziges, leicht morsches Bouquet; Herbsttrompeten, sehr intensiv. Im Gaumen noch recht füllig, sanfte Trockenheit mit viel reifer Cabernet Franc-Aromatik. 11: Mittleres Weinrot mit viel bräunlichem Schimmer. Kalter Teetonkrug und Darjeelingnoten im ansprechenden Nasenbild, angenehme duftige Süsse, dezente Jod-Torfnoten und dezente Altfassnoten im Hintergrund aber durch seine positive Aromatik noch schön zu trinken. Eine erstaunlich gut erhaltene Flasche. Das war auch schon anders… 16/20. Wertung für heutige Normalflaschen: vorbei
