The 2013 Dominus is, to my way of thinking, one of the most profound wines Christian Moueix has yet made in his rather brilliant winemaking history, both in France and in Napa Valley. This wine, with very low yields of only 3,500 cases and a final blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc, offers up notes of cedar wood, forest floor, loamy soil and oodles of blackberry and blackcurrant fruit. Very opaque purple in color, super-pure and intense, this wine has low acidity, but ripe, noticeable tannins. This is a 30- to 40-year wine and a profound effort from this famous vineyard in Yountville. Drink it over the next 40+ years.<br/>Christian Moueix has probably had his two greatest back-to-back vintages to date with the 2012 and 2013. The 2012s, which are just being released, include the unbelievable Dominus, made of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc and coming in at 14.3% natural alcohol. I said last year that it reminded me somewhat of the 1991 and the 1994, which are both still very strong efforts and, while fully mature, showed no signs of decline if well-stored. Tel. The aromas to this are multidimensional and fascinating with black truffles, bark, cloves, black currants, citrus, and even ginseng. Full-bodied, yet reserved and austere with chewy and powerful tannins that remain polished and refined. The flavors are more umami and savory. Then there are forest fruits and blood-orange undertones. The wine goes on for minutes. A wine to age for a lifetime. It's an experience to taste this. A new classic showing its history and tradition as a source of the greatest wines ever from Napa. A wine to enjoy forever.

Dense and earthy, with a submerged core of rich blackberry, currant, anise and sage flavors. The dusty, loamy earth character lends balance and definition. Ends with cedary tannins and good length. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2032. 3,500 cases made. –JL

In the late 1960s, Christian Moueix fell in love with both the wines and the vineyards of Napa Valley. By the 1970s, he was back at home in France working for his family’s vineyards. However, as the son of famed Jean-Pierre Moueix, the most notorious wine merchant and producer in France, his family’s estates consist of some of the best - Pétrus, Château La Fleur-Pétrus, Château Trotanoy in Pomerol, and Château Magdelaine in Saint-Émilion. However, with his heart still set on California, Christian returned to Napa in 1981, and finally, in 1995, he entered a partnership to develop the historic Napanook vineyard. He named the property “Dominus” meaning the “Lord of the Estate” in Latin to accentuate his commitment to the land. Today, many of the exotic and budding elements of his Bordeaux background shine through in his wines – specifically in his flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, Dominus. While his second label, Napanook, is debatably just as impressive, and even more approachable, needing only three to four years to mature. While Dominus benefits from at least ten years’ patience.
