A sensational offering from Navarra, the 2007 Baron de Magana is an intriguing blend of 35% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Tempranillo and 10% Syrah aged 14 months in primarily new oak. As its composition suggests, it is somewhat Bordeaux like with lots of black currant and cherry fruit intermixed with notions of forest, underbrush and barrique. Full-bodied, dense, rich and intense, this impressive red can be drunk over the next 7-8 years.
Producer
Bodegas Viña Magaña
One of the leading producers in Navarra, Bodegas Viña Magaña was founded in 1968 by vinous pioneer, Juan Magaña. Today, the property extends over 100 hectares in the southern part of the region, lying just south of the Ebro River. Planted to one of the warmer sub-regions of the DO, the terroir here adds a distinct minerality and acidity to the blend. As one of the main reference points for quality in Navarra, Bodegas Viña Magaña produces a handful of exemplary reds. Dignus for example is a contemporary, fresh blend of Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Garnacha that has the potential to age well. While Baron de Magaña is made from a selection of fruits from the oldest vineyards in the region, with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo coming from the Castejón vineyard and Syrah coming from the Arguedas vineyards. In general, these bottles offer an outstanding quality for a reasonable price.
