Beautiful aromas of summer fruits and hints of cream. Then turns to dried Provenal herbs, such as rosemary. Well-defined Sass. Full-bodied, with sleek, refined tannins and a silky finish. All in finesse. Classy wine. Almost chewy. Reminds me of the excellent 1997, but this is slightly better. Give it time. Best after 2008. 15,000 cases made. JS

Compared to the 2002 vintage that seems serendipitously suspended in time, the 2001 Bolgheri Sassicaia is in a more significant downward decline. The 2002 vintage was widely-panned. Back in the day, the 2001 vintage was given a full five stars for excellence. Despite the accolades, this wine does not have much life to give. The bouquet shows aromas of cured meat, petrol, smoke, dried herb and dusty earth. The primary aromas have left the building. The mouthfeel is dry and quickly flat-lining.
Producer
Tenuta San Guido
Italy’s most iconic wine estate, Tenuta San Guido, has grown even more into their reputation following a recent string of great vintages of the country’s most celebrated wine, Sassicaia. Established in the 1940s, the winery did not present its first commercial release until 1968. By 1985, Robert Parker reaffirmed their reputation, giving the 1985 Sassicaia a perfect score and ultimately putting the estate on the worldwide wine map. The single estate in 1994 became the first ever to receive their own DOC, Bolgheri Sassicaia. Distinction holds true in their production, from their second label, Guidalberto, to their third wine, Le Difese, each wine is unique and impressive in its own way.
