Dark ruby red. Blackberry, with lots of fresh herb and meat character. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and loads of fresh fruit and tarragon. Dill flavors on the finish. Textbook Sassicaia that grows in the mouth. Give it a little more time.--1997 Italian blind retrospective. Best after 2009. 12,500 cases made. JS
85 Robert Parker
The 1997 vintage was universally hailed as a true breakout year for icon wines from Tuscany. In fact, it spurred a quality revolution for Italian wine in general. Sadly, the 1997 Bolgheri Sassicaia does not live up to the hype. This is an offbeat effort with an intense sense of dryness and dustiness that ultimately diminishes the wine's pleasure factor. What little fiber there is to grab onto comes as quickly as it leaves. The effect is short and sudden. In all, this wine exhibits an advanced state of evolution. The fruit that may have still existed ten years ago is now replaced by a hollow dry oak tannin instead.

Tenuta San Guido
Italy’s most iconic wine estate, Tenuta San Guido, has grown even more into their reputation following a recent string of great vintages of the country’s most celebrated wine, Sassicaia. Established in the 1940s, the winery did not present its first commercial release until 1968. By 1985, Robert Parker reaffirmed their reputation, giving the 1985 Sassicaia a perfect score and ultimately putting the estate on the worldwide wine map. The single estate in 1994 became the first ever to receive their own DOC, Bolgheri Sassicaia. Distinction holds true in their production, from their second label, Guidalberto, to their third wine, Le Difese, each wine is unique and impressive in its own way.
