The 2014 Clos Martinet, a blend of Garnacha, Syrah, Cariñena, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from a warmish vineyard, feels riper than the 2013. It had black rather than red fruit, and it also showed a lactic touch. The palate is quite powerful, with abundant, slightly dusty tannins but has better integrated oak, as it's matured in larger volume casks, and also in cement and clay amphorae. Today, I clearly prefer the 2013. There are 10,200 bottles produced.
Producer
Mas Martinet
Based in the wild Spanish region of Priorat, Mas Martinet is considered one of the best wineries in this high-quality DO. Home to 7 hectares of vineyards, planted on steep, terraced vineyards, the Pérez Ovejero family crafts impressively complex and structured wines. The family focuses on the cultivation of native grape varietals, like Garnacha and Cariñena, as well as international varieties, like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. Sara Pérez is now at helm and continues to amaze wine critics with her simple, authentic Priorat wines. The estate produces a handful of wines, including their eponymously named Clos Martinet, which is a rich, elegant blend of Garnacha, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cariñena, as well as, their deep Cami Pesseroles, which is a blend of old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena.
