Recognized by its colorful artistic label, the 2018 Alto Adige Lagrein is a real beauty inside the bottle as well. It pours forth with inky intensity, and these results from Franz Haas show more purity, tightness and sharp intensity compared to its peers. The bouquet reveals ripe aromas of plum, dark cherry and blackberry, delivered with raw and vinous tones that give the wine character and accessibility. The finish is moderate, and the mid-palate is not too deep, but you get a lot of local color and character. Some 19,000 bottles were made. Try it next to hefty polenta with stewed beef and mushrooms.
Producer
Franz Haas
Since its foundation in 1880, the Franz Haas winery has passed through seven generations with every firstborn named Franz Haas. Since the very beginning, the winery has always been focusing on expressing the quality of its grapes. During the 80’s most of the vines were replaced. Nowadays, Franz Haas works with grapes coming from 55-hectares of vineyards, mostly of his own, but also a part of them are rented or provided by other farmers. The vineyards are situated in the areas of Egna, Montagna and Aldino ranging in altitude from 240 and 1,150 meters above-sea-level. Each have their very own microclimatic and geological conditions, varying in soils from porphyry sand to clay to chalky. Due to the progressive climate change in 1999, Franz Haas rented several hectares on levels up to 850 meters above-sea-level in the area of Aldino and planted vines of Pinot Nero, Riesling, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco, Sauvignon and Müller-Thurgau at the highest altitudes. After more than fifteen years, this decision has proved to be quite cutting-edge. These new vineyards bring excellent results and supply grapes producing long-lasting, aromatic, fresh wines with a pronounced acidity.
