Dark, inviting and very alluring, with captivating black tea, charred mesquite and kirsch aromas and flavors allied to a remarkably silky mouthfeel. Superlong, with mineral, violet, pepper and additional crushed cherry and plum fruit notes all gliding through the finish. Best from 2011 through 2027. 5,500 cases made. –JM

Vincent Avril fashioned one of the finest 2008 Chateauneuf du Papes of the appellation. Made from a classic blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah and the rest an assortment of permitted varietals, it exhibits a dark color as well as a bouquet of lavender, kirsch, licorice, loamy balsamic notes and hints of roasted meats and herbs. Evolved by this estate’s standards, it is an elegant effort with surprising density and richness. I actually prefer it to the 2005 (which was The Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year). The 2008 should drink nicely for 10-15 years.

Clos des Papes
One of the great benchmark estates, Clos des Papes covers cover 35-hectares in Châteauneuf-du-Pape producing two wines, one red and one white. As one of the key figures behind the appellation’s monumental reputation, the legendary Paul Avril owned and ran the property for many years until his passing in 2009. Today, his talented son Paul-Vincent has taken the reins. Amongst their southern Rhône property, 31-hectares are dedicated to red varieties, favoring their single red cuvée Châteauneuf du Pape, which is a blend of chiefly Grenache with about 20% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and the remaining is a mix of Vaccarèse, Counoise and Muscardin. Clos de Papes wines are structured and age-worthy examples of the region. The Arvils continue to ferment the different varieties together, adding complexity to their product. The white, Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc will also age well.
