One of the great benchmark estates, Clos des Papes covers cover 35-hectares in Châteauneuf-du-Pape producing two wines, one red and one white. As one of the key figures behind the appellation’s monumental reputation, the legendary Paul Avril owned and ran the property for many years until his passing in 2009. Today, his talented son Paul-Vincent has taken the reins. Amongst their southern Rhône property, 31-hectares are dedicated to red varieties, favoring their single red cuvée Châteauneuf du Pape, which is a blend of chiefly Grenache with about 20% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and the remaining is a mix of Vaccarèse, Counoise and Muscardin. Clos de Papes wines are structured and age-worthy examples of the region. The Arvils continue to ferment the different varieties together, adding complexity to their product. The white, Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc will also age well.
