Sehr dunkles, sattes Granat mit violettem Schimmer. Königliches Bouquet von Trüffel, Brombeeren, Cassis und dunklen Edelhölzer, fein pfeffrig im tiefen Untergrund. Im Gaumen perfekt, gross und erhaben, von der Kraft und der Aromatik her schon eher im Pauillacbereich, kräftige Adstringenz mit einer Garantie für 50 Jahre Genuss und das erstmal etwa in 12 Jahren. Ein grosser Klassiker der mit den Leadern des gesamten Jahrganges buhlt. 11: Auf dem Weingut degustiert. Duftet nach Dörrbananen und schwarzen Beeren. Saftiger Gaumen, genial gereifte Tannine. Eine Meisterleistung.

2008: Typically extracted and powerful (which is atypical in a vintage such as 2008), this offering may lack charm, but it is “locked and loaded” with plenty of background oak, huge black cherry and black currant fruit, medium to full body and a boatload of tannin. Forget it for 8-10 years and drink it over the following three decades.

Alluring, with warm fig sauce, plum and currant paste notes liberally laced with espresso bean and dark roasted vanilla bean notes. Fleshy but focused, with the roasted edge adding definition and length. Drink now through 2019. 16,665 cases made. –JM .

Château Léoville Barton
Planted amongst the gravelly-clay soils, Château Léoville Barton is a long-established top producer in Saint-Julien. After the French Revolution the original Léoville property was split three estates, one being Léoville Barton, and the other two are fittingly Léoville Las Cases and Léoville Poyferré. Known today as one of Bordeaux’s great-value wines, the 2ème Grand Cru Classé property actually lacks its own château. Vinification therefore, with the same attention to detail takes place at the Barton’s family’s other Saint-Julien holding, Château Langoa Barton. From the early 1800s Léoville Barton has belonged to the Barton family, and Anthony Barton has managed the vineyards since 1986. The Grand Vin Léoville Barton is consistently intense and long-lived, a true Bordeaux meant for extended cellaring. The wine is a medium-full claret with well-thought oak, the fleshy, youthfully firm textures will develop harmoniously with several years’ patience.
