The 2015 Le Gay comes from the 6.5-hectare Pomerol estate, of which 2.09 hectares are currently being restructured. It is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc picked from 27 September until 8 October at one degree lower alcohol than Montviel; it has a fragrant bouquet with delineated red cherries, crushed strawberry and hints of vanilla from the 100% new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, ripe and rounded in the mouth, very well balanced and very smooth. This just glides across the mouth and once that new oak has been absorbed, this will be a gorgeous Le Gay to behold. Do not overlook this Cru because it has been on a roll in recent years

Goes for a showy style and pulls it off, with a cashmere feel to the layers of warm fig, blackberry coulis and plum reduction. Ganache and warm espresso notes line the hedonistic finish.—J.M.

90 % Merlot, 10 % Cabernet Franc. 18/20 2024 – 2042

Château Le Gay
The wines of Château Le Gay attract the most demanding of wine-lovers. Currently owned by the Péré-Vergé family, this top Pomerol estate owes its inviting reputation to the Robin sisters. Marie and Thérèse owned Château Le Gay for over sixty years and during this time the estate became widely respected. The two women are famously remembered by their father’s motto “Quality before quantity”. Following in the charming sisters’ lead, Catherine Péré-Vergé purchased the property in 2002, immediately enlarging the vineyards to 10-hectares. Just ten years later, Catherine unfortunately passed away, leaving the estate in the hands of her four children, with her son, Henri Parent acting as managing director. Today, Château Le Gay tends towards modernization, with brand new winemaking facilities and sustainable viticulture practices. Manoir de Gay is their contemporary second wine, while the Grand Vin, Le Gay is opulent, rich with berry fruit, and slightly oaked. Six to seven years’ patience will unveil the wine’s inspiring cedary complexity and finely crafted structure.
