The nose is fresh, bright, and dense. With aromas of violets, minerals, spices, cool stones, mint, dark fruits, and plum skins, this is beautiful. Very much still a baby right now, it needs much more time. This is a wine for the next generation. Finesse and elegance, truly a wine that makes you contemplate life. This is not about power, there is really nothing like it. 93% Cabernet Sauvignon. Do not even think about touching this for another ten years, 2020.

12: Leuchtendes Granat, dunkle Mitte. Wenig Kommunikation in der Nase, zarte Süsse, helles Caramel, Cassis, Zedernholznuancen, heller Tabak. Erst im Gaumen kommt die wahrliche Grösse, die Tannine sind präsent und trotzdem fein, bei Schlürfen kommt das unvergleichliche Lafite-Parfüm. Ein delikater, finessenreicher Lafite, der vielleicht gar einmal – in konzentrierterer Form – an den 1953er erinnern wird. (19/20). 15: Immer noch violette Reflexe im satten Purpur zeigend. Das Bouquet wirkt frisch, klar und zeigt eine leicht wachsige Cassisnase, alle Aromen sind noch im Primärbereich und klar ausgerichtet, sehr delikat und vielschichtig. Im Gaumen mit perfekter Adstringenz, sattes Extrakt, Brombeeren, Cassis und Edelhölzer. Im direkten Vergleich war dies der absolut grösste Wein des Abends. Ich hatte ihn früher auch schon mit 20/20 und jetzt war dies wieder fraglos der Fall. 17: Sattes Purpur, zeigt praktisch noch keine Reifetöne. Im Bouquet weisser Pfeffer, Ledertöne, dramatisch tiefgründig und eine trockene, konzentrierte Tiefe anzeigend. Man spürt die Grösse, aber man merkt auch sehr schnell, dass dieser Wein noch wenig Lust hat, sich zu öffnen. Im zweiten Ansatz zeigt er Teer und rauchige Konturen und erinnert so fast etwas an einen riesengrossen Hermitage. Im Gaumen ein Elixier von schwarzen Aromen. Er ist in sich gekehrt und doch mit sehr feinsandigen Tanninen. Auf dem Sprung zu einer möglichen Legende. Momentan heisst da die empfohlene Devise: «Do not touch!». (20/20).

This is remarkably young, with a deep well of succulent black currant, fig and blackberry fruit notes that feel 10 years younger than most peers, carried by wave upon wave of velvety tannins. Despite the density and heft, there's glorious length and finesse too, with alluring black tea, smoldering charcoal and warm paving stone notes just starting to emerge. The 2000 Lafite-Rothschild is deep in color. It has a beautifully defined bouquet of blackberry, cedar and mint, still quite closed but very focused. There is a lot of power here, but maybe not the same level of elegance as other vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, firm grip, very nicely judged acidity and good density on the finish. This is quite backward and muscular at the moment, although aeration/decanting shaves some of its edges. It’s just beginning to open and improves with time in the glass.
