This is a gorgeous display of fruit, with boysenberry, fig and mulberry notes rolling through, showing both muscle and refinement as they carry a punch, while staying silky and lush in feel. There are sweet tobacco, sous bois and black tea flavors peeking in on the finish and this is remarkably fine-grained for the vintage. A clear classic. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2025 through 2040. —J.M.

Aromas of smoky blackberries, black truffles, pipe tobacco, loamy soil and rose petals introduce the 2019 La Mondotte, a medium to full-bodied, deep and velvety wine that's lively and gourmand, with a rich core of fruit that's framed by beautifully polished tannins. This Merlot-dominant cuvée derives from vineyards on the plateau neighboring Troplong-Mondot, but the soils are shallower here, without the same reserves of deep clay.

The 2019 La Mondotte has a wonderful, pure bouquet of expressive black cherries, boysenberry, crushed violets and peony scents that flourish with aeration. Sensual yet succinctly controlled. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, very smooth and cohesive. This is not a deep La Mondotte, and you might quibble about a slightly brief aftertaste, though I suspect this is more due to tasting in winter. Give this 3–4 years in bottle and it will gain depth and persistence to become a very fine Saint-Émilion.
Producer
Château La Mondotte
This up-and-coming Right Bank producer, Château La Mondotte is one of the greatest garagiste to emerge in the last half of this decade. Similarly owned by the reputable Stéphan von Neipperg, along with his several other leading Bordeaux estates, La Mondotte is quite recent to the wine scene. Produced at von Neipperg’s Canon-la-Gaffelière, the 4.5-hectare vineyard debuted their first vintage in 1996. Since then, the brand has grown into one of the two finest vins de garage coming from Saint-Émilion, next to Le Dôme. The superbly well-drained, clay-silt terroir found on this unusually steep south-facing plot has produced remarkably deep and concentrated wines for two decades. Made in the classic Stephane Derenoncourt style, La Mondotte is aged on the lees in new oak for a year and a half, before being bottled unfiltered. The Merlot based blend, balanced by Cabernet Franc offers a desirable lush texture, flawlessly sewn with tannins.
