This has a sappy feel, with lots of kirsch, plum reduction and blackberry compote flavors, inlaid with brambly grip. Features a noticeable tarry streak through the finish, but this maintains good energy along the way. A strong showing.—J.M.

The 2016 La Louviere has a very well-defined bouquet with ample black fruit, hints of cedar and black olive, nicely focused and somehow, effortless. The palate is medium-bodied with a rounded opening, blackberry and raspberry fruit mixed with tobacco notes, though I found just a touch of greenness that disturbed the balance on the finish (exactly the same as I found on the 2014). Maybe that will become subsumed into the wine by the time it is bottled? I hope so, because otherwise this is a fine La Louvière; but at the moment, I will be parsimonious with my score and keep my fingers crossed.

Château La Louvière
Nestled in Bordeaux’s winemaking cradle, Château La Louvière can be found in Pessac-Léognan, just several kilometers from the city. Benefiting from a long vinous history of over seven centuries, the current château was built by Jean-Baptiste Mareilhac during the French Revolution. By 1965 the neoclassical château was purchased by André Lurton, who worked to restore the estate’s former glory. Terroir-based vineyard management, environmentally-friendly viticultural practices, and traditional winemaking methods coupled with the judicious use of modern techniques enable La Louvière to produce dry white and red wines of great character.
