Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 La Cabanne (composed of 94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc) opens with some cedar/oaky overtones, giving way to a fragrant core of warm black cherries, fresh black plums and blueberry preserves with sparks of spearmint, powdered cinnamon, dried roses and redcurrant jelly. Full-bodied with taut, muscular black and blue fruits, it has a firm line of rounded tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy.
Producer
Château La Cabanne
Situated in the heart of Pomerol, Château La Cabanne was named after the tiny area of La Cabane where the property sits. Owned by the Estager family since 1952, their 9-hectare vineyard is found close to Trotanoy and Clinet and is planted to mostly Merlot with a bit of Cabernet Franc (6%). Today, Francois Estager is at helm – crafting well-balanced reds with unique bouquets of red fruit and cocoa. Using both traditional and modern methods in the vineyard and in the cellar, the resulting wines are round and velvety on the palate with soft, unaggressive tannins. After careful blending, during which only the best wines are kept aside for the Grand Vin, there leading red is one of the greatest wines in Pomerol. Château La Cabanne also produces a second wine, Domaine de Compostelle, from younger vines.
