A neoclassical edition of Grand-Puy-Lacoste, this has cedar, graphite, deeply integrated cedar and spicy-oak influence and a very fresh array of ripe blackberries, dark cherries and cassis. The palate is so seamless. It builds beautifully and delivers a long, seamless array of perfectly ripe dark fruit, swathed in fine, firm, ascending layers of tannins. As good as we have seen in recent vintages, this is a star of the vintage. Try from 2024.
Producer
Château Grand Puy Lacoste
Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste is the quintessential Pauillac estate, and has been producing admirable and classic Bordeaux reds for decades. One of the oldest family-owned châteaux in the appellation, the property has only been in the hands of three different families since the 16th century. The Borie family being the third, acquired Grand-Puy-Lacoste in 1978. Over three generations of the Borie linage have contributed to the winery’s illustrious reputation, today, second generation, François-Xavier along with his eldest daughter, Emeline manage the estate. Along the Gironde estuary’s Left Bank, the 90-hectare Médoc property dedicates 55-hectares mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon growth, as well as smaller plantings of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The classic Bordeaux château produces two first-class wines, both similarly owe its velvety backbone to Cabernet Sauvignon. The Grand Vin coming from this classified growth is a noble and powerful red, that is precise and elegant as much as it is robust, the Grand-Puy-Lacoste.
