19 Rene Gabriel

Lovely soft tannins with coffee and cedar with ripe fruit. China tea. Subtle. Cloves too. Full and round with beautiful fruit and a crisp finish. Very ready. At its peak.
90 Wine Spectator
Intense aromas of currant bush and berries that turn to roses. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a floral, leafy and fruity aftertaste. Builds on the palate. Needs time. Best after 2011. 17,500 cases made. ?JS

89 Robert Parker
This classically-styled claret did not merit an outstanding rating because it lacks sufficient concentration to compete with the estate?s top vintages. However, it offers a dark ruby/plum color, nicely evolved notes of roasted herbs, sweet cherries and currants, and loamy earth, medium-weight, light to moderate tannin, and an elegant style. If it puts on weight over the next few years, it may deserve a slightly higher score. Anticipated maturity: now-2018.

Producer
Château Calon Ségur
Like many Bordeaux estates, Château Calon Ségur in Saint-Estèphe has shown significant developments in quality during the late 1990s. Their increased attention to detail during the viniculture processes have been successful in their production of more opulent, harmonious wines. Therefore, justifying their rank of Third Classified Growth as per the famous 1855 Classification. Historically in the Calon family since 1147, the property passed into the hands of Nicolas Alexandre de Ségur and generations later, Marquis de Ségur, the previous owner of the famous Bordeaux estates, Château Lafite and Château Latour. The illustrious Marquis, as the tale goes, said “I make my wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon.” Thus explaining the notorious heart shaped label found on each of the château’s bottles. The previous proprietors, the Gasqueton family, sold the property to Suravenir, a large French insurance company in 2012 - ending over a century of ownership. Today, it is no secret that this is one of the leading vineyards in the Bordeaux appellation, if not in the world. The 55-hectare property is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot grapes, and produces their greatest wines, the Grand Vin of Calon Ségur which mirrors the terroir’s essence, as well as their velvety second wine, Le Marquis de Calon Ségur. With the change of ownership, Château Calon Ségur opens a new chapter in its history. The restructuring of the vineyard, and the construction of a new vat-house and ageing cellar will allow Calon Ségur to better express the secrets of its unique terroir.
