19 Rene Gabriel
04: Beeindruckend tiefe Farbe, viel violette Reflexe. Insgesamt dreimal verkostet. trinken (2011 - 2026)

Loads of crushed berries, with mineral, lightly toasted oak and licorice. Full-bodied, with big, velvety tannins and a long, caressing finish. This is the sleeper of the vintage. Best after 2010. 17,500 cases made. –JS

This shows so wonderfully now with a dense palate yet a delicate chocolate, mineral and walnut skin. Full and velvety. Wonderful with juicy length and a long finish. Almost Burgundian in texture.
93 Robert Parker
This beautiful 2003 exhibits a dense ruby/purple color, a vigorous youthfulness, and plenty of mulberry, black currant and cherry fruit intermixed with notions of cedarwood, baking spices and roasted herbs. Ripe, medium to full-bodied, fresh and precise, this wine is just hitting full maturity where it should remain for another 10-15 years.

Producer
Château Calon Ségur
Like many Bordeaux estates, Château Calon Ségur in Saint-Estèphe has shown significant developments in quality during the late 1990s. Their increased attention to detail during the viniculture processes have been successful in their production of more opulent, harmonious wines. Therefore, justifying their rank of Third Classified Growth as per the famous 1855 Classification. Historically in the Calon family since 1147, the property passed into the hands of Nicolas Alexandre de Ségur and generations later, Marquis de Ségur, the previous owner of the famous Bordeaux estates, Château Lafite and Château Latour. The illustrious Marquis, as the tale goes, said “I make my wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon.” Thus explaining the notorious heart shaped label found on each of the château’s bottles. The previous proprietors, the Gasqueton family, sold the property to Suravenir, a large French insurance company in 2012 - ending over a century of ownership. Today, it is no secret that this is one of the leading vineyards in the Bordeaux appellation, if not in the world. The 55-hectare property is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot grapes, and produces their greatest wines, the Grand Vin of Calon Ségur which mirrors the terroir’s essence, as well as their velvety second wine, Le Marquis de Calon Ségur. With the change of ownership, Château Calon Ségur opens a new chapter in its history. The restructuring of the vineyard, and the construction of a new vat-house and ageing cellar will allow Calon Ségur to better express the secrets of its unique terroir.
