A hedonistic, modern-styled St.-Emilion, the dark ruby/purple-tinged 2004 La Couspaude reveals plenty of pain grille/new oak aromas intermixed with notions of espresso roast, kirsch liqueur, and plums. Medium-bodied with loads of fruit and wood characteristics, this is an uncomplicated, but delicious, forward style of wine to drink over the next decade.

Aromas of tar, blackberry and lightly wet earth. Full-bodied, with chewy, slightly drying tannins and a medium finish. A bit overextracted, but should come around nicely with time. Best after 2009. 3,000 cases made. ?JS

Château La Couspaude
The petit and rare, Château La Couspaude is home to 7 hectares of vines in the center of Saint-Émilion. Producing only 3000 cases per year, the vineyards are planted to mostly Merlot, with smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon on the limestone plateau. The name, La Couspaude stems from “La Croix Paute” – which was used to describe the cross that still marks the intersection in front of the estate – it was a meeting point for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. This wonderful property has been in the Aubert family for more than 100 years and they continue to marry tradition with terroir to make ripe, opulent, full-bodied wines.
