Packed with juicy black currant and blackberry flavors from start to finish, this red also evokes licorice, spice and tar accents. Dense and well-structured, with fine balance and a long, fruit- and spice-filled finish. Best from 2016 through 2024. 2,500 cases made.

The 2012 Bolgheri Superiore shows a dark and savory side of the appellation with pressed fruit nuances followed by spice, leather and wet earth. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc offers what I can only describe a traditional interpretation of the appellation with some rawness and rusticity at the edges. The wine takes on better shape with time (I also decanted the bottle). It opens very slowly.
Producer
Castello di Bolgheri
Flying under-the-radar for so many years, Castello di Bolgheri is finally gaining some traction in the wine-world. Their large plot surrounds the castle and extends for over 130-hectares, with 53-hectares planted to Bordeaux varietals. The vineyards stand perpendicular to the sea, and profit from the cooling winds during the summer season. Inherited from Countess Franca Spalletti Trivelli, her son Federico Zileri Dal Verme now owns the winery. The estate produces two reds under enologist, Alessandro Dondi. A Bordeaux inspired blend called Castello di Bolgheri Superiore, and a second label, Varvàra, which is often a popular choice amongst the Tuscan locals.
