If 2008 felt cool and Atlantic, the 2009 Roda I could be described as Mediterranean, from a warm and healthy vintage. Here they aim for black fruit character while the regular Roda should show red fruit. The grapes are sourced from over 30-year-old vines and is mostly Tempranillo with some 5% Graciano. It matured in first and second use French oak barrels for 16 months. It's a warm vintage, without reaching the heights of 2011, but there was some stress in the peak of the summer, which in some wines might have provided some dry tannins. The advantage of old vines is that they are able to absorb these effects. There was some rain in September that might have saved the vintage. In general, everybody talks about a very healthy vintage, but again the challenge is to keep the freshness. The nose shows those aromas of thyme and rosemary, with dark fruit, ripe and a bit heady. The palate is truly spicy, voluptuous and full, with dusty, fine tannins and a tasty finish. 99,661 bottles produced.<br/>I met with Agustín Santolaya to taste through the new vintages of Roda. We also did an interesting comparative tasting of wines from Roda and Bordeaux, where they obviously proved to be very different. Consistent, modern, classic Rioja wines with better integrated oak each vintage.
Producer
Bodegas Roda
The leading new-wave producer in Rioja, Bodegas Roda has become one of the most significant wineries – and not only on a national scale – but an international one. Situated along the Ebro River, in Haro, the birthplace of DOCa Rioja, Bodegas Roda owns an impressive 76-hectare property planted to a majority of Tempranillo with a smattering of Graciano and Garancha. While the estate was established in 1987, the vines are well over 30-years-old. Their deep-rooted vines cultivate signature complex, mineralistic structured wines. With a clear-cut intention, Mario Rotllant followed his vision to create the most distinctive Riojas, unlike any that have come before. With the support of his enthusiastic team, including managing director, Agustín Santolaya Santolaya, viticulture specialist, Isidro Palacios Negueruela, and skilled oenologist, Carlos Díez De La Concepción, Bodegas Roda quickly took shape. No expense was spared, the team invested heavily in both the vineyards and the cellars. Today, the bodega is the perfect fusion of modernity and tradition. The contemporary styled winery, complete with the best technical facilities is perfectly complemented by the estate’s sustainable viticulture practices in the fields. This detail-oriented property produces two remarkable Reservas, Roda I is the flagship – a powerful and well-structured pure Tempranillo, while Roda is a touch lighter but still much more than a second wine.
