Born in yet another hot vintage on the Tuscan Coast, the 2017 Redigaffi is dark, richly concentrated, textured and soft. It offers a broad collection of plummy dark fruit aromas with cherry preserves, chocolate-covered prunes, grilled rosemary and Indian spice. However, what stands out most in this edition is the power and the firmness of the tannins. This is the proverbial big wine with a capitol B that could use more time in bottle.
This is a year of birthdays for Tua Rita. The iconic Redigaffi is celebrating its 20th anniversary (1993-2013) with a special magnum release, the 2013 Redigaffi 7 Magnum. A mere 420 magnums were produced, and the wine is hitting the market at an ambitious $1,600 retail. The 2017 Guisto di Notri is also distinguished by a special label to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Auguri, or congratulations, Tua Rita.
This is powerful, from the vanilla- and coconut-scented oak to the concentrated blackberry, black currant and fruitcake flavors to the muscular tannins that support it all. Notes of Mediterranean scrub and tobacco peek through on the long finish. Best from 2023 through 2035. 900 cases made, 100 cases imported.

Azienda Agricola Tua Rita
The demure Tua Rita estate is located in Suvereto, a quaint medieval town found between Livorno and Grosseto. In 1984, Rita Tua and her husband, Virgilio Bisti purchased 6-hectares in southern Tuscany. They immediately planted the land to international varieties – Cabernet and Merlot. The property is now over 25-hectares, and ranks amongst the most consistent producers in Tuscany. Its first vintage was released in 1992, and this was just the start of their worldwide praise and accolades from wine connoisseurs and critics. Tua Rita’s exceptional quality and tiny nature earned it the reputation as one of Italy’s first Garagistes. A term used to describe small Bordeaux producers like Le Pin and Valandraud. Their Redigaffi Merlot has now achieved cult-like status. It was also the first Italian wine to receive a perfect score of 100-points from Robert Parker for its 2000 vintage. Tua Rita’s exciting assortment of reds and whites have almost single-handedly put this bright new zone on Italy’s winemaking map.
