The 2018 Biserno is a beast of a wine (packaged in a heavy glass bottle) that fills the room with its perfumes as you pour the wine into your glass. The bouquet is thickly layered and rich with potent notes of ripe blackberry and blackish plum followed by baker's chocolate, spice and dark mahogany or cigar box. Excellent work has been achieved to tame the tannins, and the wine offers a long, polished feel and an impactful, full-bodied presence. The blend of fruit used here (from a seven-hectare parcel) is 28% Cabernet Franc, 32% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. Production is 30,000 bottles.<br/>The current evolution of this estate sees Tenuta di Biserno and Lodovico as two parallel brands under the Tenuta di Biserno umbrella. Tenuta di Biserno is managed by Niccolò Marzichi Lenzi, the son of Ilaria Antinori (sister to Piero and Lodovico Antinori) and is a family business spanning several generations. Tenuta di Biserno farms 40 hectares of vines in Bibbona, just across the municipality line from Bolgheri. The vines were planted in 2002 in mixed calcareous clay soils known locally as "Bolgheri conglomerates." High density, 6,500-plants-per-hectare spacing was used for Cabernet Franc and Merlot. A few years later, a special parcel within the estate was recognized for its distinctive results. Tenuta di Biserno
Lodovico Antinori è la grande forza che sta dietro a queste due tenute, Tenuta di Biserno e Campo di Sasso. I vini provenienti da queste proprietà sono stati creati dalla capacità di Lodovico di prevedere il vero potenziale del terroir. L'attenzione e la determinazione hanno portato alla produzione di vini ineguagliabili. Tra le colline scoscese di Bibbona, Tenuta di Biserno si trova in Alta Maremma, al confine del borgo storico di Bolgheri. La proprietà di quasi 50 ettari è stata scoperta nel 1995, quando Lodovico cercava di espandere la già ragguardevole proprietà dell'Ornellaia. Grazie al terroir peculiare, molto più collinare e pietroso dell'Ornellaia, Lodovico annunciò di voler utilizzare questo lotto per il suo progetto personale. Unendo le forze con il fratello, il Marchese Piero Antinori, e il proprietario terriero Umberto Mannoni, la Tenuta Biserno prese vita. Il vino di punta, etichettato con l'eponimo Biserno, è un assemblaggio ponderato di Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon e Petit Verdot. La proprietà produce anche un secondo vino, il Pino di Biserno, e una super cuvée che ha preso il nome di Lodovico, prodotta da un singolo appezzamento di viti che ne garantisce il carattere e la personalità uniche.
