Wynns Coonawarra Estate
Wynns has one of the longest wine histories in Australia. John Riddoch moved to the Coonawarra area in 1861 and used the land for sheep farming. Starting in 1890, he subdivided almost 800 hectares of terra rossa soil on his own area calling it the Coonawarra Fruit Colony. He sold off the most of the land in allotments to 26 original 'colonists' who began planting vineyards and fruit trees, while keeping a portion for himself for the same purpose. Today, Riddoch's original vineyards are at the core of the Wynn Estate. In the 1950s, the area was recognised for its ability to produce excellent Cabernet Sauvignon, though much of the wine industry at the time produced fortified wines in the style of sherry and port. In 1951, Samuel Wynn and Co., Melbourne-based winemakers and merchants, purchased and renamed the estate. As Australians taste for red wine grew, so did their vineyard holdings. Today, they make 13 different wines including John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine that was conceived in 1982 as their flagship wine for the Wynns Portfolio and was named in honour of John Riddoch who was the largest land owner in South Australia's south-east corner.
