More medium-bodied and elegant than the more serious Domaine de Baron’Arques release, the 2014 Limoux La Capitelle de Baron’Arques checks in as a mix of 47% Merlot, 26% Syrah, 17% Malbec and the balance Cabernet Franc that was raised in one-year-old barrels for six months. Blackberries, plums, licorice, smoked herbs and lots of rocky minerality emerge from this medium-bodied, fresh, nicely balanced effort, and it shows more chocolaty dark fruit with time in the glass. It’s nicely balance and will drink nicely for 5-8 years.
Producer
Vignoble Baron Philippe de Rothschild
This Languedoc estate, which goes back to the 17th century, was bought by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild (of Château Mouton Rothschild) and her two sons in December 1998, when it was known as Domaine de Lambert. Following the purchase, they invested considerably in the estate - renovating the vineyards and cellars which took 5 years to complete. Expanding over 100 hectares (of which 48 are planted to vines), there is notable diversity to its soils, micro-climates and varieties. The land lies in Limoux, a region that is mostly known for its sparkling wines as well as its still Chardonnay. In 2005, the Limoux appellation was changed to include red wines. The Rothschilds produce two wines: a Chardonnay, as well as a red blend produced from Syrah, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
