The second vintage of the second wine is the strictest in the Bordeaux sense. The 2010 Macán Clásico has benefited from one extra year in bottle compared side by side with the 2011, the fruit is receding and more complex aromas of bottle age are emerging, subtly balsamic with notes of forest floor, spices, more red fruit than black fruit, balanced and subtle, quite harmonious. The palate is medium-bodied and serious with some grainy tannins, good acidity. It is both subtle and immediate, accessible, yet ripe without excess. It ends with a slight, but pleasant bitterness. 33,8000 bottles and some larger formats were produced, less than for the Grand Vin.
Producer
Rothschild/Vega Sicilia
This estate is the unique partnership between the Rothschild family of Lafite and the Alvarez family of Vega Sicilia. They began working together in the early 2000s. They both believed that the Rioja area had still so much potential and was untapped and wanted to see the results from their merged winemaking knowledge and experience from this region . After quietly working together for numerous years, they finally rented winemaking facilities in 2009 and created the company. They began buying older vine vineyards on clay-limestone soils. Some vines are as young as 35-40 years while others are as old as 100. Their vineyards total 75 hectares are are dispersed across Rioja’s greatest sub-regions – Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. They produce two wines Macán Clasico and Macán – one for earlier drinking and one for lying down. Their goal is to produce subtle and refined wine, similar to Rioja of the 1950s and 1960s rather than modern styled wines. Macán comes from “Macánes” which is the name from the natives of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, the village where their winery is located.
