The 2009 Macan has aromas of black rather than red fruit, ripe and intense blackberries with some floral notes developing with time. Dense with licorice and some prune flavors, it is spicy and balsamic as well as tighter and more backward. They told me they don't like green aromas, but they also dislike notes of liqueur. Concentrated but managing to keep the freshness, it is a clean, powerful and modern red in need of a little bottle aging to polish its tannins. It will be fascinating to see how these wines develop in bottle, and how the Rioja character, the vineyards, come through with time. 40,000 bottles produced. Drink 2016-2025.

Producer
Rothschild/Vega Sicilia
This estate is the unique partnership between the Rothschild family of Lafite and the Alvarez family of Vega Sicilia. They began working together in the early 2000s. They both believed that the Rioja area had still so much potential and was untapped and wanted to see the results from their merged winemaking knowledge and experience from this region . After quietly working together for numerous years, they finally rented winemaking facilities in 2009 and created the company. They began buying older vine vineyards on clay-limestone soils. Some vines are as young as 35-40 years while others are as old as 100. Their vineyards total 75 hectares are are dispersed across Rioja’s greatest sub-regions – Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. They produce two wines Macán Clasico and Macán – one for earlier drinking and one for lying down. Their goal is to produce subtle and refined wine, similar to Rioja of the 1950s and 1960s rather than modern styled wines. Macán comes from “Macánes” which is the name from the natives of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, the village where their winery is located.
