The 2012 Il Carbonaione represents a tremendous effort. This is a stylish and generous wine that delivers high caliber aromas of dark berry, spice, leather, cola and grilled herb. Il Carbonaione is a single-vineyard expression of Sangiovese from 80-year-old vines. It is the result of years of research into the variety by leading enologist Vittorio Fiore and his team. What distinguishes this wine is the quality of its aromas, the immaculate way in which they are presented and the silky, long nature of the mouthfeel. This is a beautiful wine.  Podere Poggio Scalette is based in Greve-in-Chianti and showcases the work of celebrated enologist Vittorio Fiore. This estate is known for its Il Carbonaione (an IGT wine made with 100% Sangiovese). As a result, its base wines - such as the excellent Chianti Classico - are often overlooked. Oct 2015

Podere Poggio Scalette
Perched on the slopes of the Greve Valley, Podere Poggio Scalette takes both its name and unrivaled reputation from its landscape. From a distance, the terraced vineyards and olive groves appear as a spectacular series of stairs, climbing up the hilly scenery found at the heart of the Chianti Classico appellation. Leading enologist, Vittorio Fiore pieced together this estate in 1991, restructuring and expanding over the years, the land now consists of 40-hectares, 15 of which are dedicated to vines. Today, this biodiverse plot is still looked after by Vittorio, however his wife, Adriana Assjè di Marcorà and their talented oenologist son, Juriji Fiore manage the day-to-day responsibilities. Poggio Scalette produces a handful of incredible reds. A Chianti Classico named Il Carbonaione, which is a Bordeaux-styled pure Sangiovese made from the properties oldest vines. Then there is the plush Merlot labeled Piantonaia. And their newest release, Capogatto, which is an equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
