A rich and expressive red, with green olive, rosemary, grilled beef and fig cake notes set on a silky palate and framed by supple tannins. Offers a lightly juicy, mocha-laced finish. Drink now through 2021. 13,333 cases made.

The 2010 Syrah Maroccoli is a dark and spice-driven wine with broad aromas of dried cherry and exotic spice. The 2010 vintage offers less vibrancy than past editions of this wine. It feels slightly closed and takes a while to open. Maroccoli shows medium length with softly supportive tannins. Drink 2014-2019.

Diego Planeta, along with Giacomo Rallo of Donnfugata and Lucio Tasca d’Almerita, is one of the three founding fathers of the “Sicilian wine renaissance” sparked 10 to 15 years ago. Cousins Francesca, Santi and Alessio Planeta hold the reigns to the estate today and have developed one of the most innovative and modern wine entities in Italy (they are among the most “liked” wineries on Facebook). The Planeta family boasts a gifted hand in marketing and their hard work has only helped to develop the “Sicily” brand within the many foreign markets they penetrate. Enormous credit goes to them. Although Planeta’s wines are always impressive, I was less enthused by this set of new releases. The entry-level products represent excellent value, but the top tier wines (including a wine I love very much, Santa Cecilia) are not at their peak performance.

Producer
Planeta
Planeta passionately believes that each terroir merits its own winery – making them one of the few producers in Sicily to own wine estates all over the island. There are, in fact, six wine-producing estates: Feudo di Mezzo in Etna, Buonivini in Noto, Dorilli in Vittoria, Dispensa in Menfi, Ulmo in Sambuca di Sicilia and La Baronia in Capo Milazzo. Recently established in 1995, the Planeta company has quickly created a deeply rooted reputation for quality wines. Cousins Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta currently run the business, but behind them they have a long family history of skilled Sicilian farmers. Therefore, its innovative vinification procedures are matched with ritualistic know-how making detail-oriented, never hurried wines. The six separate estates equal over 360-hectares of vineyards, consisting of native varieties: Grecanico, Carricante, Moscato di Noto, Frappato, Nerello Mascalese and Nero d’Avola, as well as classic French varieties, such as Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet.
