The 2014 Sicilia Menfi Chardonnay takes Sicilian white wine to a whole new level. The Planeta family has been tinkering with this wine for a number of years and has gradually lessened the overall oak impact. That change is evident here and the grapes have benefitted from the excellent 2014 growing season. This was one of the best vintages in recent memory on the Mediterranean island. The bouquet offers balanced spice and ripe fruit with soothing creaminess and big intensity. I'm going to suggest a long drinking window for a wine of this high quality.

Importer(s):

Palm Bay Imports, 301 Yamato Rd, #1150, Boca Raton, FL 33431 , (561) 893-9998 , www.palmbay.com

Light- to medium-bodied and balanced, this fresh and easy-drinking version offers a round, creamy palate of Gala apple, chopped hazelnut, lemon curd and white peach. Drink now through 2019. 25,000 cases made. –AN
Producer
Planeta
Planeta passionately believes that each terroir merits its own winery – making them one of the few producers in Sicily to own wine estates all over the island. There are, in fact, six wine-producing estates: Feudo di Mezzo in Etna, Buonivini in Noto, Dorilli in Vittoria, Dispensa in Menfi, Ulmo in Sambuca di Sicilia and La Baronia in Capo Milazzo. Recently established in 1995, the Planeta company has quickly created a deeply rooted reputation for quality wines. Cousins Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta currently run the business, but behind them they have a long family history of skilled Sicilian farmers. Therefore, its innovative vinification procedures are matched with ritualistic know-how making detail-oriented, never hurried wines. The six separate estates equal over 360-hectares of vineyards, consisting of native varieties: Grecanico, Carricante, Moscato di Noto, Frappato, Nerello Mascalese and Nero d’Avola, as well as classic French varieties, such as Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet.
