The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Rennina is a dark, plush and succulent red wine with seamless overall integration. Angelo Gaja makes his wines with broad brush strokes that form shapes of perfect harmony and grandeur. He seems less interested in the minutiae, much in the same way an impressionist painter creates a portrait without consideration for the gritty details of reality. Continuing with my art metaphor, I'll venture to say that this is a big-picture wine that embraces bold fruit, oak spice, acidity and tannin in one overwhelming and warm embrace. I usually score the Sugarille a point or two higher, but this year the Rennina won my heart.
Producer
Pieve Santa Restituta - Gaja
Pieve Santa Restituta was acquired in 1994, and represents Gaja’s first wine estate in Tuscany. Reaching heights of 350-meters-above-sea-level, the clay-rich, pebbly soils have always made this Montalcino property one of the finest in the region. The Gaja family also heavily invested in a new top-of-the-line winemaking facility in the early 2000s. Today, with 16-hectares of vineyards spread across four plots, the estate produces one of today’s most recognized European wines, Brunello di Montalcino. The captivating charm of Brunello di Montalcino is its tannic yet age-worthy characteristics. Pieve Santa Restituta also produces a signature blended Brunello, that expresses the appellation’s best attributes following the house’s personal style. The estate also crafts two vineyard-specific wines, the powerful Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille, which comes from the estate’s oldest single vineyard plot. While the elegant Brunello di Montalcino Rennina is a culmination of the remaining three sites’ fruit marked by Gaja’s ever so famous special touch.
